Musings with Mom

Bees are all loaded up and ready to go, only problem is they're too heavy to fly. So they take a pit stop on the deck railing to shake a leg before letting their wings take flight onto the next flower. A deserted home sits in silence as nature continues to run it's course crawling up the walls, filling in the basement, and turning the backyard into what looks like a small jungle (coming from a West Virginia girl who's never seen an actual jungle, but trust me, it's a jungle over there!)

As we sit and swing and stare off into nature, Mom tells me that this is what her meditation consists of. After always hearing me talk about yoga, meditation, mindfulness, nutrition, yadda, yadda, she "confesses" she doesn't have a formal meditation practice but the feelings of peace and clearing of the mind, she gets from this. Absorbing into nature.

Meditation can be absolutely anything as long as you can clear the mind of the chatter, and find some space to reset your thoughts and emotions. Dishes, cooking, swimming, gardening, drawing, dancing, sitting on the porch watching nature as it unfolds... Take time to realize what it is for you.

This was so sweet to hear though. It reminded me of a passage in The Mastery of Love - a Toltec Wisdom book by Don Miguel Ruiz, about love and what we are... which I'd like to share with you...

"Life is not the body; it is not the mind; it is not the soul. It is a force. Through this force, a newborn baby becomes a child, a teenager, an adult; it reproduces and grows old. When Life leaves the body, the body decomposes and turns to dust.

You are Life passing through your body, passing through your mind, passing through your soul. Once you find that out, not with the logic, not with the intellect, but because you feel that Life - you find out that you are the force that makes the flowers open and close, that makes the hummingbird fly from flower to flower. You find out that you are in every tree, you are in every animal, vegetable, and rock, You are that force that moves the wind and breathes through your body. The whole universe is a living being that is moved by that force, and that is what you are. You are Life."

She finds stillness in the absorption of Nature because she is seeing a reflection of her true Self. When we see beauty in others, we are actually seeing beauty in ourselves. When we really like the way our best friend listens to us, we like it because it is a quality we have and enjoy in ourselves that maybe we're just not expressing at this time in our lives.

When we get lost and absorbed in the peacefulness and joy of nature, we are directly experiencing the peace and joy we have in ourselves. The force that opened the Rose of Sharon bush, that fueled the bees wings to land there, that grew the lush greenery all around the abandoned home, we appreciate and know and love that force because we are the same.

When you are feeling lost and unhappy with yourself or unsure of yourself... take the time to go out and become absorbed into nature. Feel the breeze, take in the vibrant colors, hear the bees buzzing and birds chirping, smell the flowers bursting all around you. Realize that this Life of beauty is happening all around you AND INSIDE of you. You are One with this nature. You have the same potential as that giant oak tree. The same Life force resides in each of you.

You are not your mind, you are not your body, you are not your past, you are not the stories you tell yourself. You are a Force. You can change direction at any time. Put your energy and love towards things and people that fuel you, that return the energy, that help you grow and that excite you. Your mind and your thoughts do not dictate who you are; don't let them drag you down, worry you, or waste your time with unworthiness.

Use Nature as a place to clear that overactive mind. You are in the middle of a love affair between the earth and sky, feel that love coursing through you as the channel. Love, Creativity, Peace, Joy, Strength. You already have all that you need.

"Go to a wide-open space,

Gaze without looking anywhere.

The mind stops it's building of thoughts,

And rests on its own foundation-

Immensity.

The light that you see by

Is the light that comes from inside."
